Today we entered the Westfjords. Some people call it little iceland. Apparently only about 14% of people who visit iceland go to the Westfjords. I'm not sure why. It is a beautiful area, though maybe a little more rugged/wild than other parts of Iceland because it is not as visited.
Today involved lots of driving with beautiful views.
Because everywhere you looked pretty much was either a fjord or a mountain.
We stopped at this charming little place to use the restroom. But Mark couldn't resist ordering a waffle, which I was not mad about.
Especially since he shared it with me. It came with homemade jam and fresh whipped cream. So delicious.
We saw some more seals! They are actually above where I am pointing.
Here is a terribly blurry photo of them from my phone. But we got some good ones using Mark's fancy camera and telephoto lens.
We drove as far as we could out this peninsula.
And then walked to the very edge.
We stopped in the next town at the Arctic Fox Center. They have two arctics foxes that a hunter found abandoned and brought them to rescue. They were very cute.
This one was very playful.
He tried to eat my braid.
An steal my purse. The only pick-pocket I met in Iceland!
Driving the westfjords takes forever because you are driving around a bunch of small peninsulas, so you are essentially driving back forth over and over again. But they built a tunnel through one of the mountains so you can get between those two town pretty quickly. But they only made the tunnel one lane wide, so you have to pull over into one of the pullover areas when you see a car coming towards you.
Another nice view:
It got really foggy in the evening. I'm pretty sure we were just inside of one giant cloud. So we were trying to take this scenic drive into a fjord, but had to backtrack because this was the view:
We stopped briefly at this small town that only had this house, a church, and a museum:
And then decided to camp at the base of Dynjandi falls. We couldn't see Dynjandi when we arrived though because of the fog. It made for an excellent campsite though with the noise of the water to fall asleep to.
