Iceland day 2

We started our morning with a visit to skogafoss waterfall. This is the waterfall that you have most likely seen on the cover of a guidebook to Iceland. It is super famous and very impressive in person. Photos really don't do it justice.

There is a hiking path with tons of stairs so you can climb up for a higher view.

Once you reach the top of the fall, you can hike back a ways toward its origins. Here is a mini fall leading toward it:

On our way back down there was a perfect rainbow in front of the waterfall.

Our next stop on the ring road was the Solheimasandur plane crash. Sometime in the 70s this US military plane crashed in Iceland. No one died, and the plane was just never removed. So the skeleton of the plane sits on a black sans beach in Iceland, about 2 miles off of the road. Something about the destroyed, yet sleek body of the plane juxtaposed with the wide-open beach around it is just stunning.

After that we went to the Dryholaey sea cliffs. Mark was on the hunt for puffins, but we didn't find any there. We did find some spectacular views though!

On our way to Vik we found a black sand beach that we could walk on. Mark liked it.

But I loved it.

Next we went to Fjadrafglijufur. Say that 5 times fast. It was a beautiful hike. First we hiked up on top of the cliffs.

And then down below.

I didn't make it very far below because it required a river crossing with water up past Mark's knees to continue, so I waited while he continued on for a bit.

On our way to our campsite for the night we saw these sheep grazing outside of their fence.

And I ate a White Lion bar. These were introduced to me in Lithuania, and they are only available in a few countries. They are DELICIOUS! So I was very excited to find them here.

We also stopped at a random waterfall that was right next to the road.

Getting ready for dinner at the campsite:

Mark made tortellini.
