We left the hostel this morning accompanied by a light drizzle. I wasn't worried. But as we continued on, I soon realized I should have been. The rain increased and then the winds started. After several miles we arrived in the next town soaking wet. Luckily there was an open bar, where we had hot chocolate and a bocadillo.
We ate at a table with an Australian man named Warren. He is 75 years old and walking his third Camino. We saw him several more times throughout the day as we kept passing each other back and forth.
We continued on in the rain and passed through a second town. After that, the rain lightened enough for me to whip out my camera.
Mark, soaking, but smiling:
Several miles later we passed through a small village. I believe our book said the population was 30 people. At the entrance to the village were these little hobbit house looking entrances built into the hill. We had read previously that sometimes hills were used to store wine, so I assume that's what these were for.
We kept on walking past muddy fields that were ready to plant.
And luscious green fields.
After hours of walking, we could see the next city (our destination) off in the distance.
We passed this tiny church on the far outskirts of town:
And passed through these stone posts reminiscent of The Neverending Story. Don't worry, no laser beams shot out of their eyes.
Eventually we made it to Sahagun!
We found an albergue:
And claimed our beds.
Then we headed out to check out the city.
Later on we had dinner. We had the pilgrim's menu, which is basically a three course meal with several choices for each coarse. It was pretty great. Here is Mark's meal:
Cream of zucchini soup
Meatballs. He was a little disappointed with the small portion. My steak was way bigger and had more fries with it.
All in all a successful day.

the "hobbit houses" are so cool!
ReplyDelete"hobbit houses" I agree and I am so glad there where no laser beams shooting out of anyone's eyes. How many miles do you average? I love reading your blog.
